The knob has officially replaced thatmoustacheas the most controversial facial hair. The prevailing opinion seems to be that goat hair is better in the 1990s, along with padded-shouldered jackets and baggy ties.
While it's no secret that chin-length beards have faded in popularity, guys like Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kanye West still wear them, so they can't be totally boring, right?
The style magazines may say the goatee looks bad, but we think there are still ways to make it work. So we've put together some tips on how to sport a goatee in the 2020s and get away with it.

WHAT IS A CAVINHA?
The knob is defined by theoxford dictionaryas a short, sometimes pointed beard, which takes its name from its resemblance to the tuft of hair from a goat's chin.
Beardbrand goes one step further, defining a goatee as facial hair that only grows on the chin. The chin is one of the 5 regions where facial hair grows, the others being the mustache, soul spot, cheeks or mutton chops, and neck.
The goatee is often combined with the mustache and soul patch to form a circular beard, often incorrectly referred to as a Van Dyke.
Chivo vs Van Dyke
We'll detail each knob style in the next section, but there's a lot of confusion out there, so let's clear that up first.
You often hear about a knob called a Van Dyke, but there is a difference between the two.
The standard goatee does not include a mustache. It is the circular beard, another style of goatee, which is often incorrectly referred to as a Van Dyke. The rounded beard contains the mustache and forms, you guessed it, a circle around the mouth.
The Van Dyke also includes a mustache, but it is not attached to the sides of the mouth. The Van Dyke is T-shaped rather than round in shape.
GOAT SPECIES
We have divided the knob into seven different styles.
GOATEE
A standard goatee has only grown from the chin and soul patch, but does not include the mustache. That's allFred Durstat the height of the popularity of limp bizkit and baseball players, many baseball players. It is usually kept shorter, around half an inch to an inch. That wasn't Woodstock '99, but we figured it was a complete knob.

chin point
The Chinpuff bears the closest resemblance to a real goat. Similar to the standard goatee, the chin does not include a mustache. It's a standard goatee, getting longer at the chin and soul mark, at least two inches long. The chin pad can be as wide as the mouth and more rounded in shape, or narrower in a teardrop or diamond shape.

CIRCULATED BEARD
The rounded beard is the most common goatee style. The goatee connects to the mustache and forms a circular shape around the mouth. It is worn both short and long, with the longer version often being referred to as a long goatee. Kanye West, Idris Elba, The Rock, Brad Pitt, Brad Paisley, Leonardo DiCaprio and Common have circular beards, as does Guy Fieri.

UNPITCH OFF
Another standard goatee style, the parted goatee is similar to the round beard, but the mustache and goatee do not connect to the sides of the mouth. It is the easiest style of goatee to grow, especially for younger men. The goatee part of the hair can be worn wide or shorter, think Johnny Depp.
Famous separate knob:Johnny Depp, Tupac, Adam Driver, John Paul White, Michael B. Jordan
CAVINHA DE VAN DYKE
Named after the 17th-century painter Anthony van Dyck, the Van Dyke goatee combines a puffy chin and a mustache (typically a handlebar mustache). Circular beards are sometimes incorrectly referred to as Van Dykes, but Van Dykes are more T-shaped and generally do not have a point of connection to the mustache. The focus of the goatee here is really mending the soul as if puffing out the chin. Think Guy Fawkes mask and that's a good idea of the shape of a Van Dyke.
Famous Van Dykes:Anthony Van Dyck, wild buffalo Bill Cody, Carlos I, Pierce Brosnan
ANCLABLE
The anchor beard is similar to a Van Dyke's, except instead of a mustache with a puffed chin, it has a separate goatee that extends out the length of the chin. The goatee should be wider than the mustache, so if you combine the shape of the mustache, soul mark, and goatee, it looks like a ship's anchor.

BEAUTIFUL GOAT
The hairy goat has a thick, full beard combined with one to two weeks' worth of stubble growth on the cheeks and neck. The goatee is prominent, but the stubble on the cheeks provides a nice contrast. The scruffy goatee is our favorite goatee style.

HOW TO TRIM A CAVE
The goatee requires a lot of maintenance to maintain its shape and length. We recommend using an electric trimmer such asBrio Beard Landscapeto trim your goatee or at least define its contours. I have a quality pairbartschereIt is essential for more complex knob styles like the Van Dyke. Scissors offer more control and precision than an electric trimmer. To learn more about the differences, visit our blog atHair clippers vs scissors.
How to trim a knob:
- start with aboar hair brushto shape your facial hair in an even direction. This will prevent you from cutting hair that you didn't intend to.
- Use the trimmer to shape the edges and the shape of the knob. Be careful not to trim the bottom of the chin too short unless you keep the goatee very short. If you are planning to grow a long goatee, you may want to keep this hair under your chin and also on your neck. For a shorter goatee, place a finger at the bottom of the chin. This is as far as you want the hair to extend below the chin.
- Remove any hair that you don't want incorporated into your goatee.
- Use the guards that come with the electric trimmer to maintain the length of your goatee.
- Use beard scissors to trim any loose hairs. ApplyBartolooutility balmto keep hair and skin properly hydrated and conditioned. For a longer goatee, you can addStyling-Balmto get the shape of the knob.
HOW TO CUT A WAVE ON LONG HAIR
If you have a long goatee, round beard, or chin longer than a few inches, you should wear it.bartscherewith an electric shaver. Most of his grooming revolves around trimming loose hair and maintaining length and shape at the base of the goatee.
As mentioned above, clippers offer much more control than electric trimmers and allow you to create a more natural looking goatee.
How to trim a long goatee:
- To get oneBartkammand comb facial hair against the grain. This will help you identify hairs that are uneven in length. Secure them with the beard scissors. Focus only on the ends of your hair.
- Trim the bottom of the knob to the desired length with scissors. Follow the shape of your chin to create a natural curve.
- Use the scissors to cut the bottom of the knob. The pointed cut helps the goatee look more natural than if you cut it horizontally.
- To useBartolooutility balmto keep hair and skin properly hydrated and conditioned. you can addStyling-BalmoSalt sprayto get the shape of the knob.

HOW TO GROW THE CAVINHA AND BE AFRAID OF IT
Let's face it, the goatee is hard to achieve right now, unless you're Brad Pitt, Tom Hardy, or Idris Elba, and most of us aren't. However, if you're committed to the goatee, we've got some tips on how to use it and get away with it.
Of course, if you're growing a goatee in 2020, you might be the type who doesn't care about trends or what's considered stylish. If you're the type of person who likes to do your own thing, ignore the following and keep doing it.
Go scruffy goat
The scruffy goatee is our pick for the coolest goatee style. As with most facial hairstyles, the higher the contrast, the more difficult they will be. It's like a mustache – adding a stubble helps create a softer contrast and adds definition to the face.
Being dressed up without looking too preppy is the current trend. You want to go for natural-looking styles rather than heavily man-made ones. BothTom Hardymichris millingtonI used the scruffy goat and it looks really badass.
go far
If you have a round beard, let it grow. Unless you look like one of the previous A-listers, the short, rounded beard will probably push you into Michael Scott territory. Of course, if you go to Michael Scott, go for it (did she say that?).
If not, let the rounded beard grow. Similar to growing a full beard, much of the volume and length comes from the nape of the neck. It may be easier to grow your beard first and then trim your sideburns and cheeks. You can also go with a long disheveled goatee and leave a bit of beard on the sides.
Enjoy a patchy beard
If your beard is patchy and you can't grow a full, thick beard, you're in luck. A disconnected goatee paired with some cheek bumps is one of our favorite goatee styles.
ThinkJohnny Depp,John Paul Weiss(who looks a lot like Johnny Depp) andMichael B Jordan. Keep the knob on the shorter side. Just enough length to add some definition to the face is good.
Van Dyke
Not everyone will be able to pull off the Van Dyke, but if you have the genetics to do it, it's hard to argue that it's not a hard-hitting style. We think it looks best when the hair is a bit gray which creates a different look.

CAVINHA STORY: THE DEVIL, BEATNIKS AND CONFORMITY
The history of the goatee is quite strange and differs from other facial hairs in that its origins can be traced back to an animal.
How did the goatee get to your goat uncle? We'll see.
In Greek mythology, the deityPfanneIt is usually described as looking something like a goatee. Pan, of course, was half human and half goat. In early depictions, Pan had the head of a goat, so the goatee was normal.
Over time, Pan's likeness took on more and more human elements, but the goatee and horns remained.
With the spread of Christianity came the rise (we suppose the fall would be more appropriate) of Satan. After a huge marketing campaign to discourage the worship of other gods, deities like Pan were depicted with demonic qualities. The goatee then became associated with evil. Ultimately, it is the devil's chosen facial hair that resembles Pan.
It wasn't until the 17th century that the goatee began to attach itself to the human chin, when the Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck began painting selfies showing his as-yet-unnamed Van Dyke goatee. His friend, Charles I of England, sported a similar goatee, and the style enjoyed a brief moment of popularity in the early 17th century.
As the facial hair dramatically decreased, the goatee disappeared. Aside from sporadic appearances by the likes of Napoleon Bonaparte, Wild Buffalo Bill Cody, and a brief wave of longer, rounder beards in the 19th century, the goatee has mostly stuck to its folk roots.
The goatee didn't make a comeback until the 1950s.
Beatniks and the modern goatee
The end of World War II ushered in counterculture movements across the United States, including the Beat movement. In short, the rhythm movement wasThe First American Literary Cold War.
It was anti-establishment and anti-capitalism and it was gaining momentum. In 1960, J. Edgar Hoover declared beatniks one of the top three threats to America, along with communists and intellectuals.
By this time, the goatee had become the face of the beat movement, and Maynard G. Krebs was becoming its archetype. Krebs was the stereotypical beatnik sidekick to lead Dobie Gillis on the hit series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.
Cancer was lazy, unmotivated, unintelligent, and used words like "like" and "daddy-o." She sported a goatee without a mustache and exemplified what not to be.
The goatee has historically become a way ofidentify the villainin the movies, think Hugo Drax in Moonraker. He became the strange counterpart to baby-faced goodness.
Interestingly, none of the three writers widely considered the most influential of the Beat Generation (Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs) ever wore a goatee. Ginsberg sported a full beard, but Kerouac and Burroughs were always clean-shaven.
It seems likely that the goatee was never really a staple of the beat movement, but was probably embraced by newcomers who saw the stereotypical goatee as an integral part of the beatnik style.
By the late 1960s, the Beat movement was dissolving into other counterculture groups, and the goatee was disappearing, at least among white males.
The goatee, especially the round beard, has found a home among blacks. From Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael to Julius Erving, the round beard became the de facto facial hair for black men in the '60s and beyond. Of course, a few hundred years earlier, Frederick Douglass sported a long, round beard.
The 1990s and the turning point
The late 1980s brought two things that changed the landscape of facial hair: the rise of hip-hop and MTV. By 1990, hip-hop was more than a fad and was expanding its reach further and further into the suburbs.
MTV brought hip-hop to the masses, and with it came the pioneers of goatee rap, including Big Daddy Kane, Ice-T, Biz Markie, Ice Cube, Easy-E, Erik B & Rakim, Digital U-Bahn and Tupac.
The addition of the goatee to grunge rockers Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain, and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic made it more accessible to white teens and college students. A small revival in the beat movement began in the early 1990s, and the goatee made a comeback.
They appeared in the faces of actors like Johnny Depp, Will Smith and Denzel Washington. Even Bruce Springsteen went through a round beard phase. A turning point has been reached and the goatee has reached a universal level.
For many men, the beard was still discouraged in the workplace, but the goatee was accepted.
By the turn of the century, what had once been a symbol of rebellion had become the cornerstone of male conformity.
The goatee in the 21st century
The goatee peaked in popularity in the early 2000s. Everyone from rappers, to boy band singers, to actors to your math teacher had one. The goatee was what you grew when you wanted to fit in, not when you wanted to stand out, and once again it was beginning to fade.
But like all things that achieve mass popularity, they linger well past the peak of cool. Esquire officially credits Ricky Gervaiskill the knobwhen he opened The Office in England.
When Gervais's character killed him, Steve Carrell's Michael Scott goatee closed the coffin in the US version.
When bushy beards returned, the goatee once again began its descent from oblivion, hanging by a thread held by Guy Fieris and the Kanye Wests of the world.
Will the goatee ever return to its peak of popularity? Hi Yesmójolcan go back, we think the knob can also go back to square one.
